Sewing a folded hem one stitch at a time

It is possible to sew an hem to the wrong side of a project, without binding odd the stitches first, by grafting them one stitch at a time to the wrong side.

Step 1

Place your project with the wrong side facing you, then fold the hem.

Mark with a safety pin or a small piece of yarn the row to which you want to attach the stitches.

To knit in the round, ensure you marked the stitch right below the first stitch on the left needle. Otherwise, the hem will be twisted.

Step 2

To sew the hem, you may use your project yarn, without cuting it after working the last stitch. You will need a strand of yarn measuring at least 3 to 4 times the length of the hem.

If the hem to sew is really long, you may prefer to work with smaller lengthes of yarn to avoid making knots.

To make this tutorial easier to consult, I choose to use a contrasted coulour strand of yarn. It add a little stripe effect to the sewing.

Step 3

Pass the needle into the 1st stich on the left needle, from right to left. Pull the yarn.

Step 4

Locate the wrong side of the stitch to which you will attach the 1st stitch from the needle.

Pass the yarn from bottom to top into the right lower bump of the stitch and pull the yarn without tightening.

Step 5

Pass the yarn from top to bottom into the lower left bump of the stitch and pull the yarn without tightening.

Step 6

Pass the yarn again into the 1st stitch from the left needle, this time from left to right. Be careful not to make a knot.

Drop the stitch fropm the needle. Don’t tighten the yarn yet.

You have attached the first stitch of the hem.

Step 7

Pass the needle into the following stich on the left needle, from right to left. Pull the yarn.

Step 8

Pass the yarn from bottom to top into the bump from step 5. Pull the yarn without tightening.

Step 9

Pass the yarn from top to bottom into the lower left bump of the stitch and pull the yarn without tightening.

Step 10

Pass the yarn again into the stitch from the left needle, this time from left to right. Be careful not to make a knot.

Drop the stitch from the left needle. Don’t tighten it yet.

Step 11

Repeat steps 7 to 11 until you have a few stitches sewn.

Tighten lightly the sewn stitches, then continue until you have sewn all the hem’s stitches.
